Background of the study
Safety practices in the construction industry are critical for ensuring the well-being of workers and minimizing accidents on job sites. In Calabar South, Cross River State, construction firms face significant challenges in implementing robust safety protocols due to rapid urban development, increasing project complexities, and resource constraints (Ekong, 2023). Despite regulatory frameworks and guidelines designed to safeguard workers, accidents remain frequent and often result in severe injuries or fatalities. Factors such as inadequate training, lack of proper equipment, and non-compliance with safety standards contribute to this high-risk environment (Mba, 2024). Construction companies are increasingly called upon to adopt proactive safety measures and embrace innovative accident prevention strategies to protect their workforce. The growing body of literature emphasizes the importance of integrating safety culture into daily operations, not only to prevent accidents but also to enhance overall productivity (Udo, 2025). This study will investigate existing safety practices, evaluate their effectiveness, and identify areas for improvement. The goal is to develop recommendations that can help construction firms in Calabar South reduce accidents and foster a safer working environment (Adegoke, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Construction companies in Calabar South face persistent challenges in maintaining effective safety practices, resulting in frequent workplace accidents. Inadequate training, insufficient safety equipment, and non-compliance with established protocols contribute to a hazardous working environment. These challenges lead to increased injury rates and financial losses, as well as diminished worker morale. The study seeks to understand the underlying factors behind these safety lapses and propose practical accident prevention strategies. Addressing these issues is critical for enhancing the well-being of construction workers and ensuring sustainable operational performance (Ibor, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess current safety practices in construction companies.
  2. To identify key factors contributing to accidents on construction sites.
  3. To recommend effective accident prevention strategies.

Research questions:

  1. What safety practices are currently implemented by construction firms in Calabar South?
  2. Which factors most significantly contribute to workplace accidents in construction?
  3. How can accident prevention measures be effectively improved?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Inadequate safety training significantly increases accident rates.
  2. The lack of proper safety equipment correlates with higher injury incidences.
  3. Enhanced safety protocols reduce workplace accidents in construction.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical need for improved safety practices in the construction industry. The findings will guide construction companies in Calabar South in implementing more effective safety measures, thereby reducing accident rates and enhancing worker welfare. The research contributes to industry best practices and supports efforts to create safer construction environments (Amadi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Safety practices: Procedures and protocols designed to prevent accidents.
  2. Accident prevention: Measures taken to reduce or eliminate workplace accidents.
  3. Construction companies: Firms engaged in building and infrastructural projects.
